RAF and USAAF Airfields and Establishments 1939-45

Locations: Within this large section over 1500 UK-based operational, support and training units are recorded for some 750 RAF and USAAF locations in the UK between 1939-45.

Each airfield location. is represented alphabetically.

To find a particular squadron or training unit on the table below , click on the chosen letter. A panel will open on the left in place of the menu showing the airfields beginning with that letter. Any selected airfield will then open in the top panel listing the units, their details and dates of deployment.

The interactive map will also help to locate airfields for the greater East Anglian region. Mouseovers identify the airfield while clicking on the location will display a unit chronology in the top frame

The number of locations shown here is far more extensive than that recorded in most of the published literature as support units and those under the administrartive command of the USAAF establishment are recorded in addition to the operational air echelons. For USAAF bases where RAF use preceded that of the USAAF, those RAF squadrons and their details are included.

Your Assistance:
As far as is presently possible, the county in which the location is placed is that at the time. However, I will have made some errors. If these are encountered, please contact me with the necessary corrections. Similarly, a few AAF Station numbers are either missing or believed incorrect. Again, positive comment would be appreciated.

Note:
To refesh the menu and top panels the prompts at the top left corner of the screen can be clicked at any time.

AAF Station Numbers:
These were allocated by the USAAF and applied to many existing RAF airfields as early as 1941. Newer airfields to be built for sole USAAF use were also allocated numbers.

In both cases the number remained even when the establishment was never put to use. Thus it will be seen that although an AAF number is recorded the detail will show no USAAF units as having been present.

Conversely, some airfields appear to have had no AAF number allocated despite frequent use.
